Count me in for the challenge as well :-) Being a total newbie at IM, I could really use some step-by-step "hand-holding" instructions/coaching

Can OCR be accessed online for free? I am broke right now and trying to lift myself up so I really need to get started. I can't go to local library (it's Xmas and closed) and I don't have a car or someone to take me there. Since I am stuck at home today, please advise how I can do online. Many thanks to anyone who can help!

Hi Cindy,

OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition. Basically, it's a type of technology that can convert images (including handwritten notes and text) into text that can be edited with word processing software. This is usually done with a scanner that has OCR software built in.

As such, it's a physical process and doesn't lend itself to online applications as far as I know. You'd have to get the document inputted first before you can manipulate it via your computer.

If you want to get started right away, visit the sites Kneb has referred us to and start thinking about different ways to use the information. As he indicated, many of the US government sites have free reports and information that you can download or copy and paste to use as the basis of your own product.

There is free software at freeocr dot net.

But you would still need a way to scan the information into your computer. Usually it is done with a scanner. I believe even older models are pretty functional but I have not had experience with them. I have also read that even a digital camera can be used to take photos of pages of books or magazines (for instance). I have not tried it myself - I'm just reporting what I have heard.

But once you have the scanned image on your computer then you use the software above to convert it to text that can be edited.

Kneb asked me to post this question in the forums, so everyone can benefit from it. Rather than include Kneb's response, I figured the question alone would give some people a starting point, and many might have options that others would've never thought:
----------

Hi Kneb,

First off, I wanted to give you a big thanks for posting those case studies. Those were extremely enlightening, and I have a few ideas already stewing.

But about your case study number 2, was that a prorprietary script made or was it something already on the market? I ask because I was into massive page generation back in 2006, when it was big, and I don't think those programs would really work for these purposes; they build more or less useless sites and don't really let you do the text-supplying.

I'd love to learn a little more about the structure of a 900 page site like that. Was it siloed? Did it have 900 links down the left nav on the home page?
---------

Best,

-Rob

It's no surprise to me that so many posts, comments, and questions that I see on the Warrior forum are from newbies trying to figure out ways to make some extra money online. And I got to thinking, I've generated VERY fast money online doing things that any newbie or experienced marketer can do.

Feeling inspired by a large new deal that literally fell into my lap, I wanted to share a few models that either myself or my past customers have used to being in money FAST doing things that really anyone can do.

Case study 1: Public Domain content + WordPress blog = $3,000 profit in 45 days.

Something like that can be done 1,000,000 times. There's no end to the content needed to make this happen. All I did was find 3 public domain books in one of the 23 best-selling niches I've identified, and then set up a niche WordPress blog.

I then copied and pasted the content of that book over a period of 45 days doing 1 to 3 posts a day. I also posted my affiliate links to related books on Amazon, ClickBank, and Commission Junction. And of course, AdSense. After 45 days I listed the blog for sale and it very quickly sold for a little over $3,000.

This is a model that anyone can follow. It's dead-simple. If you're a worker, you can develop one of these sites a day and use the automated blog posting feature in WordPress to post your content to free up your time.

Once your bankroll builds, you can do what I do, and that's outsource 99% of the work. Once you're cranking out 3-5 of these sites every single day, you can imagine what starts to happen after 45 days if all you want to do is flip these sites. I won't even post what your earnings look like even selling the sites for just $1000 after 45 days.

Do the math. It works and it's proven.

I also "mini-flip" niche blogs with Public Domain content in as little as 3 days:

I compile 1 or 2 public domain books, let´s say about "public speaking", I choose a killer free WP theme, split the content into 21 blog posts, setup the adsense and all the rest, and then sell the blog 3 days later, for anything between $200 to $600...

Not bad for 60 minutes of work.

Of course, I have a system setup, and all I do is just to select the public domain books. All the rest is outsourced for dirt-cheap.

Remember that:

1. Most people are lazy.

2. Not everybody knows and/or wants to setup a blog (or anything) and fill it with good content (from the mighty Public Domain).

Your content is great (written by great authors, not PLR-crap ghostwriters)... and hardly indexed.

3. Therefore, there are lots of eager buyers ready to buy...

Case study 2: Setting up a 900-page AdSense site with Public Domain articles. Sold for $1,500 in 30 days.

A student of mine needed money quickly and wanted to do a quick flip. All he did was copy and paste 3 public domain books into a site - 900 pages of Public Domain content, added his AdSense ads, and then put the site up for sale. Sold the site for $1,500.

Of course, he used software to automate the page building.

You can of course make much more by holding onto these types of websites and building an empire (heck, now he flips 5 sites like that each month), but sometimes you need money fast and you can do these quick flips any time you need to.

Case study 3: Public Domain Halloween images + mini site = $3,000 profit in 19 days.

I found a bunch of old Halloween images that were in the public domain.

All I did was package them up, wrote a couple of paragraphs about what is included, showed a few examples, and offered the whole package of images with full rights for $17. Sold 203 packages in October. Spent $300 on a few ads, total profit: Over $3,000.

Total time it took me to put the above together - about 3 hours max.

You can build thousands of these sites in tens of thousands of niches. The above is the smallest one I have. A similar site I have where I used the same method makes MUCH more than this all the time. I'm just saying this so you know you can use the above method any time of the year. Not just Holidays.

Case study 4: Student searches Government website, compiles its Public Domain material, makes $2,000 first month.

This is a great overlooked niche: Student Loans.

A student friend of mine put together an ebook about student loans. He obtained all of the information from a BIG public domain supplier who spits out tons (millions) of content... the US Government!

Took him a few days to put everything together, made over $2,000 profit first month, $5,000 the second month - and continues to sell ebooks like crazy. Where does he sell it? On FaceBook and student forums.

Yes, someone could have easily done all of the research and got the info for free themselves, but there is a TON of money to be made packaging up Public Domain content and information that anyone could obtain and selling it for massive profits.

The above are just some small case studies to show you some quick ways you can make money with Public Domain as fast as TODAY.

Of course there are stories about $10,000 here, $100,000 there, and even millions, but I know if I shared some of those stories with you, most of you wouldn't think it's possible.

The above numbers are small, so it's easy for you to say, "yes, I can do that", and then you do.

As you start making money with Public Domain, and as more and more rolls in, you set your goals higher... and before you know it, making $50,000 profit in a month for a few hours of work doesn't scare you any more.

PS: you will discover more Case Studies, insights and answers to Warriors questions throughout this entire thread.

All the best,
Kneb

In case anybody is interested, as a result of questions that came up in another thread about web site flipping, I created a Squidoo Lens about this topic. You can read more here:

Flipping Web Sites -- How To Turn Them Over To Buyers

It would be great if you'd vote it up, Digg it, and post some backlinks to it on any social bookmarking sites you have. I'd love to see what happens to its ranking in Squidoo as it gets more attention. (It's a fairly generic topic within the website flipping niche.)

Kneb,

You said:

Something like that can be done 1,000,000 times. There's no end to the content needed to make this happen. All I did was find 3 public domain books in one of the 23 best-selling niches I've identified, and then set up a niche WordPress blog.

I know that people check with duplicate checkers when you sell site so do you re-write content or are you finding works that are not yet on the internet? It seems like if it was from a government site or gutenberg it will show up as duplicate content unless it's re-written.

Debbie

I've done a lot of searching in the last few days and have found several books that aren't at Gutenburg or anywhere else online. There are still millions of books that haven't been put online yet, and it's really not that hard to find them. Some of them are even available in PDF, but not in text format. Those aren't indexed either...

Stuff about getting traffic has been posted a few times in the thread. Read some of the earlier posts on how you can get traffic to your new site.

How?

Go to [WorldCat.org] Search for books, music, videos, articles and more in libraries near you and do a search for the book there.

Worldcat organization is a highly useful site that finds books on local libraries around the world.
Hi Kneb,

I bought your book the other day and I 'm hooked. Thank you so much and I 'm still amazed at all the information you shared.

PD is still very new to me. I 've been digging for some books at Worldcat and will you please clarify something for me? When I specifically search for a book using a keyword phrase, I 'll add the dates from 1800 - 1922 to the keyword phrase. A number of book titles come up. I click on them but then I see the Publishing dates as in the 1980's or 1990's. I 'm not sure if I 'm doing the right thing here but how do I know for sure that the book is Public Domain before I head over to the library.

Thanks ahead for your time and help!

There are different possibilities, why books come up as published in the 1990's:

- books could be republished in that year's
- mistake by the person that punched in the dates into the database

So the best way is to checkout by sending/ asking the librarian about the publishing date of the book. You cannot be sure about the dates and everything else before you hold the book in your hand.

It's amazing what a little research can pull up...

I found this excellent resource: Sonoma County Library, California

How can you use it? Well, they have gone to the trouble of scanning a ton of images into the system. Do an advanced search, enter your subject, select Photograph for Limit and select all of the Locations. Under Sort, choose "Publication Date". When you hit "Go", you'll get your list of pictures related to your keyword, with the newer ones at the beginning. Simply start working from the end of your list and if you have any photo touch-up skills, then you're in business.

Some nice old pics of trains that I found that are clearly in the public domain:

There are so many more, it's unreal. Just let your mind go and you'll come up with all sorts of applications for this stuff.

For the train search, here's the link: Horizon Information Portal

Thanks Timo. So, even if these books were republished in latter years by someone else, the book is still PD since it said that it's original publishing date was before 1923 and I can still use them for content on my site. Is that right?

*** UPDATE ***

The Warrior Challenge is officially closed to new members...

All spots are more than filled.

I originally planned the challenge to only 10 lucky Warriors, but I received more than 30 requests in the first hour...

So the Challenge will be made with the first 33 Warriors who responded to the offer (through posting here and through PMs)...

Don´t worry, I know who you are, no one will be left out.

See you on the next days...

Now is the time for my family :)

Great thread Kneb,

Lots of great case studies. I never thought of using PD content as blog posts. It makes that job much easier now!

Cindy if you have an all-in-one printer, scanner, fax machine you probably already have the OCR software on it. I've used it many times to copy books, pages out of magazines, etc.

Republishing is a funny area...

If the original work is pre-1923 (or even post-1923 and the copyright on that specific edition hasn't been renewed), then that copy is in the public domain. Even if it's been republished 10 times and every single one after that has been renewed, the specific edition that falls into the public domain is still public domain and fair game.

Public Domain material stays in the public domain. If it is the original content and in the original publication format w/o any addition then it is in the public domain. If it is a 2nd edition published 1923 and later, it could be copyright protected if the copyright was renewed for that 2nd edition.

It was a combination of this Jack's WSO and Kneb's WSO that got me enough information to get going. Singly, they are both great, although Kneb's is much more in depth. Together, they are incredible.

Hello, this is what I don't get.

SWEET you can make a great blog/website with a bunch of free high quality information..

I search ebay, DP and sitepoint for these blogs and websites .. on ebay the blogs go for like $50 and on DP about the same..

Is there some special secret section you have to sell on, where can I see blogs and websites that people are selling for high value. Where di you sell the blog that made you $3k in 45 days at?

And there blogs you say you can easily sell for 200-600 dollars.. where are you selling these at? I search past history on ebay and I didnt see anything there, i searched everywhere (but clearly not the right prices)

Or there is like 0 bids on the blog for sale..

Sorry for having a skeptical attitude.. i just can't complete the pie on where you sell these sites to make the money you claim to make. (And I DO believe you're making big bucks, you are very knowledgeable on this topic)

The best way to sell a blog for more than $50 is to NOT sell it at DP or ebay. Check out Sitepoint.com. Blogs sell for anywhere from $50 to $15,000+ every day.

Some people have reported having trouble selling sites right now, though, so it may be harder to just throw a site up and sell it at this time. It can be done, if you know how to do it, though.

Nice post Kneb, this is very informative. And if only IM do this they will surely make income.

I don't know how to deliver what I want to say in a nice way but hope I will not offend anyone.

$3000 for a site in 45 days is near to impossible this days, 2 years before yes this is possible, I've been in site flipping business for 5 years now and my first 2-3 years in the business, selling this kind of site at $3000 in short period of time is very easy.

But since 2007 the price of sites (any type of site) is slowly dropping. This days there are so many people selling websites every where, sitepoint, digitalpoint, ebay the price really drop very fast.

And most buyer now base the price of the site on the earnings and traffic. If a site don't have good traffic and earnings you can't sell site even good looking with good and unique content for a high price.

To sell a site for $3000 , the site must earn at least $200 - $300 a month because of buyers price the site X 10 of the monthly earnings.

Unless you can point us to a place beside the sites I mentioned to sell sites, that we can find good buyers.

But over all even do we can't sell a site for $3000 the information is really great maybe we can build 30 sites and sell them for $100 per site to gain $3000 still good source of income fast and easy.

I totally agree with you as I have been selling sites for a while and now people want traffic plus revenue but especially revenue. You can sell a site in the $100 - $150 range if it looks good, is monetized well and has good content but thousands for a site without revenue is unheard of even at SP ... that is just IMHO. If I am wrong then someone please provide links to any of those sites at SP that have done so in the past 30 days or longer as you can go there now and check for yourself.

I think you guys should focus more on everything else that has been provided in this thread, and not so much on the site flipping in X days for $X,XXX. Somebody did it and made money, that's all that has been stated. Nobody is claiming that you're going to be able to make a site and sell it in 3 days for $600. Yes, it has been done, and will be done by some people, but not everybody can do it.

Why don't you take this thread for what it is? What is it? A gold mine of information for FREE that you can use to start making some money. However you make that money is up to you. Build a blog with the PD content, like it has been mentioned. You can use adsense on it and probably get up to $20 - $50 per month within a couple months. Put some Amazon books on it and you could possibly earn even more. You're not going to be able to do this with just any content, either. It's up to you to determine what people want and then give it to them.

You can also use some of the public domain image links that have been posted and use them. See if you can get some of the tremendous Google Image traffic that people are gaming for now.

Use the images and sell them as prints on your site, or even on ebay.

Take some of the public domain books and republish them, then offer them at Amazon.

This thread can really help you if you let it. If you get hung up on specifics, then you're never going to get anywhere.

Hi.

I think Bishop said it all with his last post. 100% agree there.

This thread is a pure goldmine in it self. What you do with the websites / blogs after you have created them, is irrelevant.

You have with this method made yourself a set of extremely high quality websites with none or very little out of pocket money, and in a very short time frame.

This thread is so close to a blueprint on how to do it as you can come.

Read it, Bookmark it, Print it, Do it.

Take care.
